LIFE AND BUSINESS LESSONS FROM SETH GODINS ”PURPLE COW”

Seth Godin is the worlds greatest marketer right now. He has written a lot of best selling business books his book UNLEASH THE IDEA VIRUS changed my perspective on business profoundly.

Well i am currently reading his book PURPLE COW and here are a few lessons that i have gotten so far.

  1. ATTRACT THE EARLY ADOPTERS of products and services because those are the SNEEZERS whose opinions influence the buying decisions of majority of the human population. For that to happen you must design a product that is remarkable.
  2. ON NICHE Seth Godin said ” To breakthrough to the mainstream target a niche instead a huge market” For example if you’re a professional speaker, don’t focus on the entire business market pick a niche like: hotels, hospitals, insurance companies, banks etc and focus your energy on that market, know the market, study the market and soon you’ll be the expert in that market.
  3. ON FITTING IN Seth Godin said ”In a crowded marketplace fitting in is failing. In a busy marketplace, not standing out is the same as being invincible.” So don’t fit in stand out from the crowd and you’ll command the attention of the marketplace

THE POWER OF THE STORIES YOU TELL YOURSELF

Your life is shaped by the dominant stories you constantly tell yourself. Your life is a story on it’s own, and those stories end up shaping your life.

Your life is a perpetual stream of stories……

‘’AM NOT GOOD ENOUGH’’

‘’AM TOO FAT, IT RUNS IN MY FAMILY’’

‘’IT CAN HAPPEN FOR THEM, BUT NOT ME’’

‘’WITH ALL THESE TALENT CAN I COMPETE’’

‘’ AM A WOMAN, IT’S A MANS WORLD’’

‘’I HAVE NOBODY TO HELP ME’’

‘’I DON’T HAVE CAPITAL’’

These are some of the stories people narrate to themselves. The great poet and novelist BEN OKRI said, ‘’ TO POISON A NATION POISON ITS STORIES. TO POISON A PERSON POISON HIS OR HER STORIES’’

You can change your life, by changing the stories that you predominantly tell yourself. It will cost you nothing to change your stories from a DISEMPOWERING FRAME to an EMPOWERING FRAME.

‘’I CAN DO THIS’’

‘’IT IS POSSIBLE FOR ME’’

‘’PEOPLE LIKE TO HELP AND SUPPORT ME’’

‘’I AM LOVED’’

If you constantly tell yourself stories of defeat and weakness you will eventually manifest those stories because, stories are pre-models of existence.

GREAT LEADERS TELL THEIR PEOPLE FICTIONS THAT ALTER THEIR PERCEPTIONS.

Are you a Father, Mother, CEO, MD, Coach etc. Be careful of the stories you tell your people because their perspective and perceptions of life and reality will be altered by the stories you live and tell.

It is your job therefore, to question any story that hinders or prevents you from becoming all that you can be. Be careful then, of the stories you listen to for you will eventually realize the stories you believe about what’s possible for you.

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR SELF CONFIDENCE

I believe that confidence is not the absence of fear, confidence is moving forward in the presence of fear.

Self-confidence is an essential unseen resource needed to achieve your goals and vision in life, for the world is peopled with situations and conditions that can destabilize and move you away from your hopes and dreams.

You might have the skill and qualification to get something done, but if you lack the self-confidence to take massive action you’ll be getting in your own way. So, here are five simple things you can start doing to up your confidence level.

  1. ACT AND MOVE CONFIDENTLY: Do you know of any confident person? How do they move, walk and talk? Study them and model they way they move their body and do the same. This is very important because your brain doesn’t know the difference between an imagined or real experience, so when you ACT confidently you send a message to your nervous system that you have changed. THE BODY AFFECTS THE MIND, AND THE MIND AFFECTS THE BODY.

  1. SELF-TALK AND SELF-GRATITUDE: It is healthy to talk to yourself. Words affect humans’ biochemically. Have you noticed that when basket ballers or boxers are engaging they sometimes talk trash or dirty to their opponent so as to fire them up to act. Speak words of life to yourself, instead of saying ‘’AM SO SCARED, AM SO WRONG, etc.’’ say the opposite to yourself ‘’ I AM SMART. I AM INTELLIGENT. I CAN DO ALL THINGS’’ Life and death is in the power of your tongue, to see better days speak life.

  1. VISUALIZE THE OUTCOME CLEARLY: Mentally see the conclusion of the situation before it happens. If you’re meant to give a presentation at work for example, mentally see yourself give a great talk and see your colleagues giving you a standing ovation after your talk. By mentally rehearsing your outcome your confidence level will increase.

  1. PUT YOUR SELF IN AN EMPOWERING STATE OF MIND: A state is a mental condition that is triggered by what we focus on and by how we feel. If you focus on all the problems you’re having in your relationship, you’ll sink into the following emotional state: fear, discouragement, anger, regret, uncertainty etc. However if you focus on the things that are going well in your life you’ll ascend into the following state: joy, peace, confidence, optimism etc.

  1. HAVE A GRATITUDE MINDSET: Always ask yourself ‘WHAT AM I GRATEFUL FOR?’’ By counting your blessings your confidence level will improve dramatically.

DISRUPT OR BE DISRUPTED

TECHNOLOGY, MOBILE, AND SOCIAL MEDIA ARE ECONOMIC DISRUPTORS.

In the 2face generation of Nigerian artists the Alaba boys controlled the distribution and sales of Nigerian music. They paid the artists a one time cheque and they make the titanic share from 170 million Nigerians.

Then in 2001 MTN showed up and mobile phone culture started in Nigeria. MTN started thinking non-linearly they said ‘IF MILLIONS OF NIGERIANS USE OUR LINES, WE CAN ALSO SELL THEIR MUSIC TO THEM’

Well today with N50 (which is 20 or 25 cents) You can enjoy a Nigerian artist song. The artists smile to the bank and MTN, GLO, ETISALAT add financial weight.

Sam Onyemelukwe CEO of TRACE TV said “Revenue from mobile to artist now worth more than $150 million annually”

My friend, technology is and will disrupt everything we do in this world we must all continually relearn and unlearn so that we’ll remain relevant.

Today, bloggers now buy million Naira houses in this country it didn’t use to be so.
Today guys like John Obidi has millions of Nigerians tuned to him regularly due to the technology of webinars

Welcome to our exciting world.
